| A few days ago, I was working on the computer when the internal drive
| suddenly (and audibly) spun down. It sounded/seemed as if I had just
| put the computer to sleep, only of course I hadn't, and the screen
| didn't go off. Only the drive. The trackpad would work for a couple
| more minutes -- in that I could move the pointer around, but not do
| anything else -- and then the computer would freeze. This happened a
| couple of times, then stopped, but this morning happened a couple
| more times.

This sounds like the hard disk motor is dying or losing power - it may well
be time to get a new hard disk. If it is, you can prolong the life of your
current disk by turning off hard disk spin down in the power settings. Once
the hard disk has lost power the computer will operate fine until it next
tries to access the disk. It will then stop unless the disk spins up again.

I'd open your 'book up and check the connection - if it is loose this is
probably the cause. Otherwise it's probably the HD or possibly a logic
board.

| Once when this happened, I closed the computer. Nothing happened for
| a while, and then it went to sleep naturally, as generally happens
| when I close the computer. Then I opened it back up, it started up,
| and acted as if nothing had happened. However, the other times, it
| has just been frozen, and I'm forced to reboot.

This could be because the disk is spinning back up then (if it is the motor
dying, it will be intermittant, but get worse).

| Is this a hardware problem that will require a new drive, or is it a
| corrupted OS/preference file somewhere?

This is almost certainly a hardware problem, although it is probably being
exacerbated by hard disk spin down in the power options

Hope this is correct and helps - I've only seen a Performa 630, PB 5300 (and
my PC i'm using right now with a dodgy PSU) do this.
