I doubt the RAM is causing a problem at that point in the installation. 
When it is that late in the install, your RAM for the installer has all 
been allocated.

However, I would disconnect everything, and if needed, remove one of 
the RAM DIMMs (if you are running 2 256MB DIMMs). This sounds very 
bizarre, as if something is causing the kernel to go berzerk and write 
over part of the video driver. I would love to see some of the logs up 
to this point, but probably not easily done.
