Hi everyone, Sorry for being off-topic here, but I'm hoping I can call on your collective expertise to help my son's computer. I bought him a G5 tower for graduation, and he was using an old Sony monitor with it. The Sony gave out, and he's had some offers of free monitors from friends. One, an IBM, plugs in just fine, but no picture appears on the screen. Is there a way to tell which pc monitors will work with a mac? Is there anything that I have to do aside from plugging it to the computer? Thanks for any help!
Kate
It has to be able to support the resolution and scan frequencies output by the computer. If the frequencies are too high, some monitors will refuse to display a picture. It may work at lower resolution and/or lower refresh rate.
I second this. The most likely cause is that the mac is set to a higher resolution and/or refresh rate than the monitor can sustain.
If you, say, a powerbook or ibook around - and i suspect as much, since this the G-Books list - you can test to make sure the monitor works ok by plugging it into the portable mac.
I can think of two options to try if the problem turns out be the one suspected above:
1) Borrow a monitor from a neighbor and turn the resolution down to some acceptable by the ibm monitor.
2) Connect to the g5 from the laptop and remove the adequate preference file, then reboot the g5 - then, hopefully, it will default to a lower resolution.
This option is dicier, but was the one I once had to resort to. I think the file in question is ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systemuiserver.plist but it was a while ago.
