I've also tried to start up from cd, same result. Next I'm going to reformat the drive, but I wanted to save what's on there first, and without my customary usb and firewire ports I'm having to scratch around just for a way to do that....
It sounds like you booted of the harddisk and it is running something older than 8.5 or 8.6. Try booting off the CD-ROM.
