Reply from Tom: Make sure System Preferences: Input and Output, settings are what you want, then make sure the application you are using is set to play sound through (your desired output) or to ~ Monitor (output) while playing, working or whatever. Outpit vollume is adjustable there, too. Of course your Line (level) Out cable must feed an amp, either one powering passive speakers or feeding a set of powered speakers directly.
