You did not say whether the system was previously stable for a few months or so. Also, we do not know what version of OS X your friend has, or whether your friend has just installed a new version of OS X. Apple issued OS 9.2 as a free, downloadable update, specifically to support Classic operations from OS X. OS 9.2.2 is now the standard for any dual boot computer running OS X. Even OS X 10.3 Panther came with a few software updates for OS 9.2. Take a look at: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=75186 for 9.2.2.
