You did not say whether the system was previously stable for a few months or
so. Also, we do not know what version of OS X your friend has, or whether
your friend has just installed a new version of OS X.

Apple issued OS 9.2 as a free, downloadable update, specifically to support
Classic operations from OS X. OS 9.2.2 is now the standard for any dual
boot computer running OS X. Even OS X 10.3 Panther came with a few software
updates for OS 9.2. Take a look at:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=75186
for 9.2.2. You may have to stage several updates in series to climb from
9.1 to 9.2. to 9.2.1, then 9.2.2.

Hope this helps.
