Hi Gordon,

First of all, you must stop using Norton. It's more likely to damage your disks than fix them.

To start fixing your problems, do this:

LIGHT FIXUP
1) From the OSX Finder, Launch "Disk Utility" (in the Applications->Utilities folder).
2) Select your drive, and click on "Repair Permissions' in the First Aid tab.
3) Quit when done, and see if that helps.

MEDIUM FIXUP (if needed)

1) boot your machine, and hold Command-S. This will start you up in single-user mode (a command-line mode).
2) at the # prompt, type this (exactly, without the quotes): "fsck -y" and press return. This will do a file system check.
3) let the tool run and watch what it says. Toward the end, it will either say something like "**** file system was modified" or not.
4) if it does say "modified", go back to step 2. Do this as many times as necessary (it's a progressive fix) until it does not say "modified", but no more than 5 times or so. If after that many fixes, it still says "modified", then you need more serious fixup (see below).
5) type "reboot" and press Return
6) Repair permissions (see LIGHT FIXUP). You can also run DiskWarrior if you have it, it won't hurt.

MORE SERIOUS FIXUP (if needed)

6) If you can boot from another disk or from a CD (or network boot from another machine), do that and run DiskWarrior on your drive.
7) If you still have problems after that, backup your drive, re-initialize, and re-install everything.
8)Never use Norton again.

Hope this helps,
John

Have had the Lombard freeze at least once an hour without doing anything strenuous... just seems to freeze. I bought it used with 10.2.8 (?) on it and Norton, but didn't get the disks... noticed there is no more disk doctor... or am i not looking in the right place. When i run Norton it tells me there are major problems, but to boot from the disk... anyway to fix the disk without the originals?
