Step 0: Start System Preferences and remove programs from your startup
items. If you have any third party pref panels open each and if there is an
option to turn off the utility it controls, do so. This especially applies
to Unsanity haxies if they aren't the newest updates.

Step 1: run disk utility software (boot from CD) - repair the drive and
permissions. Yes, I know the installer automatically does this but in some
cases when it finds a problem it stops the install and tells you to run disk
first aid. Might as well do it first and get it out of the way.

Step 2: install using archive and install. Archive and install is a no
brainer. It installs Panther and keeps all your preferences and
configuration information. There are a few utilities (Spell Catcher and Palm
Desktop come to mind) that install files in the root library and these files
don't get copied over to the new library. Some of us have had success in
manually copying them but I suggest just running the software installer
again.

Step 3: run disk utility again to repair permissions once you've finished
installing Panther and any updates.
