I bought a Pismo used from another list member (though it wasn't his originally - he got a deal on it on eBay a few days before). The very first thing I did was upgrade the HD and the RAM. I put in a 5400 PRM 40 GB hard drive that I found through pricewatch.com (got a pretty good deal on it, too) and two 512 MB sticks from OWC. The difference was spectacular.

About two weeks later it started crashing left and right. It turned out that one of the RAM sticks had gone south and was causing all sorts of problems. I contacted OWC (they have a lifetime warranty, but so do most manufacturers/resellers), and they were all too happy to help. I shipped them the RAM card back (at my expense, but that's OK), and they promptly shipped me a new one. So I would echo the sentiment that where you buy the RAM is important. And if you are a previous buyer from OWC, you can save a buck or two usually by buying of their email list specials.

It's been working 100% perfectly ever since. The only crashes that occur are ones I cause myself by being a bonehead (like fooling the with AirPort card/slot while the machine is running) or running buggy software.

I haven't run out of memory yet. Do you know how satisfying it is to give those memory hogs like Photoshop or Unreal Tourney 512MB of RAM?! :)

Peace,
Drew
