My mother has a 600MHz 14" iBook and it is suffering from the now infamous
logic board failure problem.

So far she has had the following go wrong, DVDs won't play, CDs won't mount
2/3 of the time, she can't burn CDs with it, the Ethernet port is dead and
as of yesterday she can no longer use her Imation Super Disk drive with it.
The screen intermittently freezes and goes dead on her.

She no longer has dial-up internet access, so there would be no way to get
the important information off the hard drive that way, assuming the modem
port still worked.

It doesn't have AirPort installed, so it can't be beamed to my brother's
Centrino Laptop.

The only way that I can think of right now to get everything off is to set
the iBook up as an external hard drive so that the info can be copied off
from either my father's iMac Rev B or my brother's Dell Latitude D800.

The iMac would be the first option as Mac-Mac always works better than
Mac-PC, but if the USB ports don't work, then 1394 with the Latitude is the
only remaining option.

How would she go about setting her iBook up as an external HD? I live in a
different city from her, so the easier the instructions are the better so
that something doesn't get lost in conveying the instructions to her.

Also, if there are any other suggestions you might have for getting the data
copied off before it goes completely dead?

Thanks,

Robin Ashe
