I take it you are using OS 9. In most cases you won't see any change unless you increase the memory allocation for each application. Click on the application in Finder, goto the File Menu, select Get Info then select Memory. The bottom number, the Preferred memory allocation determines how much memory the program normally uses. As a general rule try doubling it for your major applications.
Are there memory tweaks we can perform in OSX?
Not that I know of. OS X basically gives programs as much memory as they need using Virtual Memory as needed. I don't know if there is any mechanism to limit a program's memory usage to avoid excess page faults (use of VM). The best memory "tweak" is to pack in as much real memory as possible.
