I promised a report on my experiences in retiring the original LG DVD/CD drive in my Pismo. Panther 10.3.2. The LG drive was still functioning but seemed to have intermittent problems. In addition my SmartDisk external FW burner died. Got some great tips from this list and xlr8yourmac.com. I purchased a LiteOn LSC-24082K. (24x24x24x+8xDVD-ROM). With shipping it came in at just under $100. Installation (including the removal of the older LG drive) took less than 5 minutes. Six tiny phillips head screws - PH0 or PH1. Downloaded and installed Patchburn II. Slid new drive into bay and it worked perfectly from the gitgo. Watched Saving Private Ryan. Burnt a data and music cd using Toast 6. Everything went perfectly.

So what's not perfect? Of course the bezel on the the LiteOn drive does not match the Pismo's sexy contours. But the fit is not as bad as I expected. It is noticeable but only if you look at the fit closely. Doesn't bother me in the least. I can't see how it would be possible to install the original Apple faceplate onto the LiteOn drive.

Problems? I can't get the Pismo to start up from the new drive. Do I need to toggle a master/slave switch?
Where is it?
