I have a 500MHz Pismo with a noisy 20GB drive.

Anyway, my questing is this, is there anything one can
do other than actually replace the drive ?

If you really want silent you could consider a solid state (IDE format flash) drive like these: <http://www.sandisk.com/pdf/industrial/Industrial_Grade_ATA.pdf>
The good news is that these should plug right in place of any 2.5" IDE drive, they don't need much power, have no moving parts and are totally silent.
The bad news is that the largest one I've seen is 4 Gb and costs a couple of thousand dollars.
I converted a Thinkpad 560x with a cheap ($60) 800 Mb IDE card in place of the stock 4 Gb drive and aside from the reduction in space have been very pleased.
I expect you're not ready to go from 20 Gb to 4 Gb but if you are interested I'd be happy to share all the gory details.

I'd love to do this with a couple of 520 powerbooks I've got lying around but haven't found any solid state SCSSI drives yet.
