Lastest tries:

I'm trying to zap everything in Open Firmware ...
did the :
reset-nvram
set-defaults
reset-all

Still no go ...

When I try to shut down the computer from OF, it tells me:
erasing ff0 and some other numbers ...
ERROR erasing on nvram

I am not sure about the pram battery, the previous owner let it stand on a shelf for over a year ... , would it affect my booting up if it's dead ? I remember on my 8500, it would not boot the first couple of time, then boot from accumulated energy !

I tried connecting an external VGA display, but the display goes into sleep mode 2 seconds after hearing the chime.

NVRAM is not the same as PRAM. NVRAM (Non-Volatile RAM) is a Flash or EEPROM memory and is used by OF. PRAM is static RAM with a battery backup.

<http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=2238> is the best article I could find on the subject.
