To do the equivalent of rebuilding the desktop in OS X, you need to delete these files: LSApplications, LSClaimedTypes, LSSchemes, LSApplications_ Backup, LSClaimedTypes_Backup, and .LSSchemes_Backup (the last 3 are invisible).
