Thanks everyone for info and I have to admit that it is/was the CD ripping.
This might sound like a really daft thing not to think of but as I have been encoding MASSES of CD audio books at around 10-15 CDs each for what seems like forever, I have become so used to, and may I say good at, sticking a new CD in once the previous one was done, that I probably rip a CD during 90%+ of the time I'm at the Mac.
It'll be nice when they're all done! :o)
