My experience is different. At least two of my credit card companies send me notices with a link to log onto my online account. I play safe and don't use these links (in case some clever phisher has created a look-alike email), but I'm pretty sure they're legit.
We got email from Wachovia bank yesterday asking us to update our acct info. Turned out to be legit... Then late yesterday two more emails arrived from them apologizing for the previous... Guess they woke up, albeit late, to the consequence of phishing scams. First legit email of this type we've ever received!
Phishing scams are quite lucrative apparently. Way too many users out there that give out their private info at the drop of a hat.
Email just ain't what it used to be. :\
