Is your drive made by LG or Matsushita?  I've heard the LG drives are 
very flakey and don't work very well or crap out eventually.  Seeing as 
you can only get cds to work, it sounds like the DVD laser is probably 
out and you probably have to replace the drive completely.  If you do 
so, I recommend to go with a matsushita (panasonic) over a LG, should 
cost you around $100 or so.  Here are some links to repair sites.

am in the process of getting the $ together now and will be getting 
one in the next several days...Thanks and appreciation to those that 
responded...There were several very fair offers...
