If that is the original LG DVD/CDROM drive, they have a history of failing over time. I'm on my second one (mercifully, mine faltered while under original warranty). There are sites where you can order replacement ones (PBFixit.com and others), but I haven't checked prices there in a while, so not sure how that compares to your auth. Apple service tech's quote. If you get the choice, get the Matsushita (spelling?) for a replacement. They are reported to be much less likely to die as quickly as the LG's have.
