does anybody know of any history of problems with this application. I find it difficult to find information on it, probably because most users don't use it.
Apple shipped Panther with a major bug in FileVault. It corrupts the keychain, causing you to loose the key to decrypt the vault file. The problem occurs during folder free-space collection. Once the keychain gets damaged, everything in the vault file is lost (unencryptable).
After denying the problem existed for a few days, Apple issued a "recommendation" that you simply don't use it until a patch was issued.
Further details are available if you dig deep in Apple's Kbase. The issue was also discussed to death in the TidBITS newsletter, on the TidBITS Talk mailing list, and on sites like MacInTouch and MacFixIt.
IMO, it is unacceptable that Apple should ship a major OS upgrade with such a glaring hole. This tells me their their beta testing / quality assurance programs are either padda dodo or overridden by political scheduling concerns. Not good and not trustworthy, either way.
Of course, those who kept good backups weren't stung by this bug for long.
