Subject: 800 MHz iBook logic board replacement ? ("only the video chip
 is dead")

Hi,
Will any other logic board fit? A local user says (I'm
guessing he went to Apple) it costs Cdn $1000 to
replace it but only the video chip is dead. Warranty
is expired. I see a lot of 500, 600, 700 MHz boards on
eBay and only one 800 MHz (all way, way less than Cdn
$1000).
I haven't checked the usual dealers. The screen is
good.
Thanks
George

The boards are the same size, form factor, whatever you want to call it. However, the video is soldered on, and the 500 and some of the 600mhz versions only had the 8MB ATI, I think the same one that's in the Pismo and 1st-gen TiBook (like my 500). I believe the 800mhz model came with a 32MB video card. Some of the 600mhz models have a 16MB chip, so if you replace with that speed make sure of which one you are getting. Quartz Extreme requires a minimum of 16MB, with 32 recommended.
