It depends on what you mean by "services". If you mean web browsing or email, then it doesn't matter whether AppleTalk is on or off or whether it uses Ethernet or the serial port. If you can't access any website or your email, then I would think something is wrong in your network settings. Did the hotel provide details on how to use Ethernet in the rooms?
