Is that because that particular extension was "calling" that font? (Just a wild guess.)
Well, YA. I think the extension was pre-imaging the font so it could display things faster. My point was that just because you've found something that stopped the problem, you may not have found the source. In this case IIRC I replaced the extension (Date & Time IIRC) to no avail. I don't even recall what made me check the fonts but something did and I finally found one that, if disabled, made the problem go away. I think I just double clicked on the font to look at it and I got a message from Finder saying it was corrupt.
I've long thought that a lot of transient errors (random bombs, file corruption and what not) are due to minor damage to some files. Not enough to cause a consistent problem but enough to be annoying. Unfortunately the only simply solution to this is to do a complete re-install of the OS and apps.
