I brought my Book to the dealer: he called Apple and according to serial # my unit was defective. So I left the Book and after a week or so I was give it back.
Same book, same serial # under the battery, but the software thing does not contain the serial # anymore.

It's a mere speculation, however it is weird.

Ben

Did you try calling the dealer or Apple directly? When they service an item there is a warranty on them and I believe this would qualify as apotential problem. Some software packages may rely on this information for serial numbers. I suggest you to check with Apple.
