Today I ordered a refurb 12" Ibook 800Mhz G4/256MB/30GB/Combo from the apple
store. This is a big jump for me, as I'm writing this on a 250Mhz G3
upgraded 1400cs running OS 8.6. The ibook was as much as I could afford at
one go, but I'd like to get AppleCare, max out the ram, and get an airport
card and base station. Any recommendations on the order to do these things
in and/or other improvements I really should make? I"m also looking for a
good handbook on Panther. Any recommendations there?

I just made the same purchase and received my iBook Monday. My laptop was 1400/G3-220 so I know where you started and you are not going to believe the change. My desktop is a G4/400 w/ 512MB and the new iBook makes it feel like a turtle. If your PB 1400 has been your primary computer the iBook will really blow you away. :-) My first purchase was an Airport Extreme card and will be followed this weekend by a 512MB RAM. I already had a wireless router so I was set there. If wireless is NOT your primary concern, I'd go for the RAM first. As for the base station, depending on your needs, the soon to be released AirPort Express looks like a nice item.
