- is AppleCare REALLY recommended? (yeah, I know it is, but it's a really steep icing on top of the already hefty cake... I guess I need some horror stories to convince me ;) )
I don't have it for my iBook or iMac. But I do have very nice repair policies from the store I bought them from, much cheaper than AppleCare, and for more years. So far I have used the repair service twice and been very happy with it. If you buy from a very reputable dealer with a good return/repair policy, AppleCare is not needed. YMMV!!
I would not trust store repair policies or extended warranties if my life depended on them - even with the more reputable stores. They often have clauses/small print that excludes coverage of numerous repairs and are often a hassle to deal with. In my experience with Applecare, my computers were fixed very quickly. In addition, when I had bad USB port on my iMac's keyboard, they sent another one to me via FedEx and I got it the next day.
Applecare also offers 3 years of phone support and extended coverage and can be a good selling point if you sell your computer within the 3 year period.
I guess it boils down to personal preference. I just have had good experiences with Applecare and not so good experiences with store warranties.
