There is a version of Knoppix for Mac, I hope that's the one you are trying. I downloaded it and couldn't get it to boot on my iMac. From what I understand not many people have actually gotten it to run. I would try a CD that's known to boot in your drive. When my iMac was brand new I partioned the drive to install Linux (it's a compulsion among some of us to see if we can install Linux on every computer that passes through our hands) and could't even get get the Mac restore disk to boot. After wearing the helpful people on this list out I took it to the Apple Store. The drive had a bad ROM. But I bet it's a problem with the Knoppix. I can't help you with the USB question.
