First weirdnesses

okay, all day today, the battery icon on my menu bar has been followed 
by (Calculating...) and some but not all supposedly black text is 
actually showing up sort of multicolored on the screen.  I used 
Software Update yesterday and had it install what was recommended--did 
I open Pandora's Box?  I ran repair permissions in Disk utility as a 
starting point, but no change.  Any hints on what to do next?
