I'm really sorry to hear about that. Especially if you lost stuff on the hard drive that can't be replaced.Heartfelt condolences.
If you're thinking lowend G4, you might be budgeting enough to bypass G3s altogether.
However, if you go G3, try a Pismo 500 MHz. If lucky , you could get a good package on eBay in the $500 range. Others might suggest a later model G3 iBook with a faster processor, and with good reason. Some used units still carry a warranty. I'm surprised to hear that there are still Pismos out there under warranty! (Well, mine just ran out 6 months ago.)
But since fate has forced your hand, you'd probably be better off with a G4 if you have the cash and the prices only drop with time. Of course, you might not be in a position to wait for the prefect bargain.
Look at smalldog's offerings to see if you might pick up a good refurbished unit with warranty. Apple's site has a link to their refurbished stuff as well. The best case scenario would be something with a warranty, whether new, used, or refurbished.
Good luck and don't think about dropping off the list!
