(Maybe with Tiger.) Here's what I did: I selected a picture I liked for my Finder window. Rather than a photo, I selected a nice texture. The file was wide enough for any window I might open but not nearly long enough - just as you describe. So I opened the picture in Photoshop (choose your favorite graphics editing program) and copied it. Then I pasted it below making the file twice as tall as it had been. Unfortunately, there was a very noticeable line where the two pieces abutted so I flipped the bottom piece 180 degrees. That made it look tiled. Now I have a nice Finder window picture without ever seeing a piece of white at the bottom. Usually.
