I've got a dual USB iBook and have just begun using OSX in earnest. Of late the hard drive seems to be quite active for 15 or 20 minutes, even though I'm not using it, and indeed no programs are even open. Is this OSX maintenance, or early warning of HD failure? FWIW, it's a 20gb drive, and it's about 85% full.

If you don't have a lot of RAM, OS X will make heavy use of virtual memory and that will make your hard drive work a lot more. Having the drive that full might be an issue as well.
