My question to the listers: I am considering a new G5, but the price
of one
of these plus display, I can get 3 top of the line emacs. I understand
the
power difference between the systems, but would it be so dramatic that
we
could not work efficiently with emacs (or imacs) instead?

Another consideration would be Powerbooks, but here the price factor
is not
as dramatic and we currently would not need mobility.

Graphics would consist of desktop publishing using full Adobe suite,
(maybe
Quark), Macromedia Studio for web, and probably some light video
editing
with Final Cut Express (this may change in future to include Final Cut
Pro).

17" or even 20" iMacs would work for this, but the main problem you will have with eMacs is the size of the screen.

If you're doing any video editing at all, spend the bucks and get a G5
for it. Don't buy an Apple display (actually Dell sells some very nice
18" and 19" LCD displays, with DVI connections those will work) to save
money. Even a low end 1.6 or 1.8Ghz single processor G5 will be a
significant improvement.

Agree with Bruce here. We have card company, but we do a lot of work
in Illustrator, photoshop some Quark and a little Final Cut Express.
( by the way Final Cut Express does not work for us using any analog
footage, you need Final Cut Pro or even iMovie for that) 2 iMacs
old ones at that, do most of the work and one Dual G4 1.25 Ghz does all of
the difficult things like rendering (rendering takes forever no matter what
you are using, so you need one fast machine for difficult task and then
cheaper machines for just daily task, meaning light.) . If you are considering
iMacs wait, they are rumored to be
low on stock, the rumors are they are planning on cutting production, and
sometime around September G5 iMacs may appear, anyway the present
iMacs are over due for a renewal.
