As far as I know the Powerbooks before the AlBooks (pismo, lombard andTiBook, not 12-inch or 17-inch) will boot 9, G3-based iBooks will, also non-FW800 Powermacs should.
I will have to dig out all my OS 9 CDs and try...

P.S. I've just realized that I posted the question to the wrong list :-o I doubt the MDD is regarded a portable. Mine with 4 harddisks and all weighs a tonne!!!
