I had these exact same symptoms on my iBook (g3/900). I'd say with 90% confidence that it's your battery. I got mine replaced and it solved the problem.

Good luck.

Hi,

I just purchased a ibook 300mhz from a yard sale. It seemed to be in
perfect shape in the box with all cords and packing. However the battery
does not seem to be working. I can get it to work plugging in the ac
adapter, but all I get is an X through the battery even though they are
installed. Can someone give me some info? Does that mean the battery is
shot or is it something else? When the adapter is plugged in the light
goes to amber for a second then turns green. Does that mean anything?
also is there a pram battery in it? If I don't leave it plugged in the
date goes back to 1/1/04. Please help! any info would be greatly
appreciated. I have worked on desktop macs for quite awhile but I do not
have much experience with the laptops.
