You should check with another OS. I have a PowerBook Lombard wich hates OS 9. It has Video problems when watching DVDs and QuickTime movies (the screen crashes, and the DVDs skips, but the Screen can be fixed changing resolution, but the problem returns). When I replaced OS 9 for OS 8.6 all the problems gone. I've made every possible thing (erasing the HD, writting zeros and reinstalling everything 9.0.4, 9.1.1, 9.1.2, 9.2.1 and 9.2.2 on English and Spanish). My PowerBook works GREAT with OS 8.6. So I have OS X and OS 8.6 for DVD Playback and CD Burning (DVD Playback and CD Burning from a Sony Spressa USB Plus are NOT supported on OS X). Check with OS 8.5 (it can be found for a few dollars used), and the OS 8.6 is free from Apple.
