Just as a WAG, does she have processor cycling *on* when using 
battery power? That will often cause freezes and hang-ups with USB PC 
cards.

The other possibility is that the WS needs a powered USB hub because 
the lack of built-in USB ports certainly creates a less-than-adequate 
power environment. I don't know how much power a USB PC card actually 
provides in contrast to the 100mA or so of the built-in ports. But I 
wouldn't be surprised if it's even less under battery power. A 
powered USB hub would solve that deficiency.
