i'm a recent switch so forgive me if i sound erally clueless. i've
installed an airport extreme card into my powerbook g4. if i turn
airport on, i can see the network and i can see that i get reception,
however it says there's no connection and i get an error mssg that
says 'self assigned IP address unable to connect"... i googled this
problem and foudn:

<snip>
What you CAN do with the 169.254.x.x IP address:
ping it. If you get a response, it proves the network adapter is
working (in it's hardware.) If you can't ping it, try pinging
127.0.0.1, if you can't ping 127.0.0.1 then reset the tcp/ip stack and
all should be fine.

By the way, a 0.0.0.0 IP address is the same deal, except it has
0.0.0.0 until it times out and determines that it can't find a DHCP
server - within 3 minutes it will have a 169.254.x.x IP address. You
can also check out the windows xp fix for the IP 0.0.0.0
</snip>

can anyone explani this to me in plain english? i erally know nothing
about wifi connections... this has been my problem no matter where i
attempt it... i don't have a base station in my apt yet, but at my
friend's apt or the many free wifi areas in manhattan i can't get a
connection, only the error message... at my friend's apt, he runs
windows computers that auto detect the network and connect with no
problem, he gave me the password but when i entered it into the
airport connection manager it said that it was incorrect! he was
clueless also about any more problem solving techniques and we both
had no idea what to do... i can't ask him to reset his router, or ask
the providers of free wifi to reset their router either, which was a
suggestion i foudn on many mssg boards... even at home, i dont want to
bother getting an airport base station until i know that its not oign
to be $100 and more frustration to try to get a damn connection
without wires. i've made sure the settings are exactly as recommended
in setup (autodetect dhcp, etc) but nothing works!!! reaching the end
of my rope.... help!!!
