OS X allows fonts to be placed in 4 different locations. At root you'll see
a System folder, a Library folder, and if you have Classic installed, a
System Folder folder. The Library folder contains a Fonts folder. System
contains a Library folder that contains a Fonts folder (and so does your own
Library) and the System Folder also has a Fonts folder. Fonts can be placed
in any of these folders and will be recognized by OS X. (Applications can
also have fonts placed in their package just to completely make us bonkers.)

On my personal computer I use SuitCase to manage my fonts and it does a
great job. Others swear by Font Reserve which is also a very good font
organizer. At work I just put all my fonts in my Library's Fonts folder. I
have a collection of 'old' type 3 PostScript fonts and True Type fonts. I
have no issues with any of my applications.

One issue I did come across though was a group of damaged fonts. Word kept
crashing on startup but thankfully FontDoctor found the problem.
