Experts aside, I have one word, er..one URL for you:
macorchard.com.

Like an old friend, I found some freeware and/or
shareware that might help me out. I seriously
doubt(ed) you can simply tell your modem to dial-up
your remote Mac and get desktop access to it. I might
be reduced to sending files to a Mac-friendly freebie
website (do these still exist? I don't have a server)
and then downloading them.

What about Telnet, anyone? 
I'm using OS 8.6, dial-up, PowerBook 3400.
