Did you install the latest security update? If so, there have been numerous
reports that this update switched the underlying ftp executable and for some
reason it is turned off. You  might want to check MacNN.com, MacFixit.com
and XLR8YourMac.com for more details.

I've read on the Usenet that you could use sftp, but I don't know anything
else about it. I think that sftp is a more secured version of ftp than the
regular ftp.
