Dan K... Thanks very much for the advise on the PRAM batteries.

You're correct... the individual cells at the price quoted aren't a
cheap fix. And it may be like that of the main battery Li-ion cells...
that it almost makes more sense to go the new route. That way there may
be some warranty where as the 'cheap-fix' offers little to none.

I don't think I'm jumping to conclusions here with the batt. problems
but maybe there's something else wrong and I should have prefaced my
questions to the group with more symptoms first.

The main batt. IS 'flat' ..or Zero voltage on the copper stips. Test
button shows no sign of charge. Before, (when I had some battery power)
it held only the shortest charge.. say 10 min. But the lightening bolt
was being shown in the battery icon. Then one day I noticed that all
four lights were lit on the battery when I plugged up the AC and
thought ah.. full charge. I unplugged AC and it shut down immediately.
(It had already begun to loose Day/Date.) After powering back up I
noticed that the battery icon showed Full charge but no lights lit when
the test button was pushed. I removed the AC and instant shutdown.
Now as I power up with AC the batt. icon will first show either and Xed
out Batt. or Low/No charge.. but after a few minutes the icon shows a
Full battery (but we know it's dead). Sometimes ..with the batt. in, it
shows it Xed or Lo/No.. it's inconsistent. That seemed strange.

Another strange thing happens when I plug the AC into the back. There's
a 'little' chime.. the sleep light blinks once then what sounds like
the fan or maybe hard drive beginning to spin up whirrrs then goes
quiet. Then it seems like it takes longer than before these problems
arose to chime (for real) then boot.

Sorry to go on for so long(!) but maybe there's something more than
just dead batteries involved and that maybe this might be typical of PC
board (Power Manager?) problems. Sound familiar to anyone???

I'm enjoying the conversations about sleep vs. shut-down mode. In
Nashville we have frequent lightening storms and two or three power
outages throughout the year. And when/if there's any warning all my
computers are shut down and the plugs pulled.

Regards... Bill
