I'm not sure what you mean by "airport base station control", Bruce.
Do you mean configuring or changing the ABS settings? Or do you mean
turning the ABS modem on & off?

First of, you can certainly install Airport software under OS 8.6.
<http://www.wwc.edu/~frohro/Airport/Airport12OS86.html>

But be careful what version you install. I'm using version 2.04. The
AirPort Admin Utility in this version will not work under 8.6. All of
the other Airport extensions do. I have to go into OS 9 to change any
of the ABS settings.

BTW this is with a Dual-Ethernet ABS. I don't know what restrictions
the Graphite ABS has, or what software version it needs. I believe v.
1.2 is the Airport version most compatible with OS 8.6, but it wasn't
sufficient for the Dual-Ethernet ABS.

As far as accessing the ABS via Ethernet, that is the recommended
method, if one is having a problem doing so wirelessly. So it
shouldn't be a problem. But you need to use AirPort Admin Utility to
do it, and we're back to needing the right software version to be
able to do that in 8.6.

If you can install OS 9.x on your yet un-acquired PB, it might be
worth partitioning it and putting OS 9 on a separate partition to use
in order to access the ABS.

HTH,

Bob
