The DVD drive will work as a disk drive without the DVD PCMCIA card, but you won't be able to play DVD video. Your only option for watching DVDs on that machine is to buy a DVD drive and the DVD PCMCIA card ($50-80 each on eBay), and to use OS 9 (as OS X doesn't support hardware DVD decoding).
