Your new PowerBook or iBook won't care whether it is talking to a base
station, a Sawtooth pretending to be a base station, or the T-Mobile
connection at your local Starbucks. An 802.11 signal is the same as any
other, the only variances being speed (a, b, g etc) and range, which depends
on the antenna and the power of the radio. The only possible disadvantage
of using your Sawtooth instead of a hardware base station is range, and I
don't know if it is an actual deficit or not. Of course, you also have the
Sawtooth turned on, making noise, guess that could also be a disad.

While all "g" equipment will work with "b" equipment (as far as I've heard). "a" works on a different frequency than "b" or "g" (which both work on the same freq). Some equipment is "abg" but some is just "a". I don't know how much of each however.

Also, none of Apple's stuff uses "a".

My 12" G4 with AE also works perfectly on my friend's

I think all of you that have replied are using either Graphite, Snow or
Airport Extreme base stations. I don't have one. I am using my G4
Sawtooth equipped with an original Airport card as a software base
station. It works great, but I am still a little worried about the
Airport Extreme compatibility when I get my new Powerbook or iBook. I
guess at worst I will have to purchase a real hardware base station.
