I've never tried infrared but here's another option that works between my Thinkpad 560 and my Lombard.
If you've got an 80 Mb PC card (or CF card and adapter) you should be able to write the files to the card on the thinkpad and read the card on the Pismo.
If you don't have a card I could loan you one for the transfer.

Thanks for the generous offer Andrew. I think I'll figure out a way to do it via ethernet, would be easier than messing with the shipping back and fourth and ethernet cards are cheap. I just know that the IR between Windows laptops is very simple, when you're in range, you get an icon in the task bar, select the file and transfer, wala. Was just hoping the OSX IR would work with it so it wouldn't cost me anything (ethernet card). Oh well, still won't cost much. I'm phasing my thinkpad out so my Pismo can be my primary laptop.
