Hello. I know the Clamshell ibook specs say pc100 so-dimm ram, but will pc133 so-dimm ram work? TIA, ~Ben~
"Faster" RAM is not really faster.
Step by step: {oversimplified, but...}a) The CPU needs to go read the data at a given address. Say 1010101000000 in binary.
b) It sets those bits up on the address bus.
c) Various logic [NAND/NOR gates] hardware pieces decode that & enable that particular location in memory. That makes its data available on the data bus.
d) The CPU then READS the databus.
The rub is, none of this instantaneous. There is a set-up time spec'ed by the memory mfgr that says [roughly...]
X nanoseconds after c) happens, the data as seen in d) shall be valid.
Obviously, if it's [say] 100 ns, and you wait 130, or 160, it's STILL good. But if you read the data bus at 90ns, you are risking grief...
The speed rating of RAM is actually from the inverse of that time. Why use that? Well, advertising ["What do you mean, 60ns RAM costs MORE than 100???"] beats engineering...
So yes, you can use faster RAM than called for; all other things being equal.
