No, none of these steps helped the red problem. "PowerBook Guy" tells me 
it is more likely a bad LCD or LCD cable. The LCD had been replaced by 
Wegener media a couple of years ago.

Furthermore, the too-good-to-be-true cheap battery I bought "as-is" 
turned out to be just as dead as the original battery (don't bother 
buying any of those $5 batteries listed by bobsbid1 on eBay).
