In any case I have a clamshell iBook (graphite 366) and Apple says the max was 320mg. I put in a 512meg card and it works without problems (over a year now) so can't see why it would be a problem in yours. In my case I bought the ram in Calgary Alberta at Westworld and they installed it and tested it.

I'm pretty new to my iBook too - its a 12" G4 800 MHz machine fitted with an airport extreme card & installed with the latest version of Mac Office but otherwise is standard. As it happens, I have a 512Mb SODIMM hanging around that I could bung into the iBook, but don't know if this is the right thing to do. Given that its got 256Mb hard-wired in, does that mean my 512Mb SODIMM is too large for it as the total will exceed 640Mb? Anyone care to advise me?
