"Windows Expert BIL"s are the bane of support staff's existence. It's very easy to know just enough to be supremely dangerous and leave out the important parts when asked about the systems.

IF the network is truly open, it will work automatically. I know this; I've seen it happen. The Mac finds the network and connects right up, unless there's a password enabled, in which case it asks for it.

There is no more Mac wireless than there is PC wireless; it's like asking if Mac Ethernet is different from PC ethernet or something. You don't need to get rid of anything on the Mac barring the really odd coincidence that you have both named your SSID the same thing; if the network name is different from yours it should work fine.

You can have issues of hex vs acsii WEP keys, but the Airport help will guide you through that.
