another (changing ownership is a must!). It also means either transferring

This may be too hit and miss.
See Apple article ID #106824 "Mac OS X: How to change user short name or home directory name." MacAddict's issue of October '04 gives the same info for both Panther and Jaguar. Also, there is a utility at versiontracker.com called "ChangeShortName" v1.1 described there as an "easy way."
That will not solve the problem here, which is something in that user account is corrupted. Changing the name on the account does not actually change the account, because the important thing in Unix is not the username, but the UID, a unique number that identifies each user.
That said, if changing users fixes a login problem, the problem HAS to reside in the users /Library directory.
